Gift Basket Partnerships – How do They Begin?

by Shirley George Frazier on December 17, 2008

“I am looking for a partner to help start up a part time business making gift baskets.”

This is the first line of an ad that’s currently running on Craigslist.org.

I certainly don’t fault anyone for being entrepreneurial and deciding to seek help by locating a partner, but I’m not sure if this is the way to find the right person.

How might this partnership work?

1. The right person sees this opportunity and contacts the entrepreneur.
2. One person is creative while the other happens to enjoy the business side.
3. A written agreement is signed and adhered to, making for a successful, income-producing arrangement.

How might this partnership not work?

1. The person answering this ad, or the person advertising it, may be in deep debt or have mental instabilities and not disclose these facts to each other.
2. The person creating the ad may not have all checks and balances written to make sure the agreement is fair and equitable.

There are many successful partnerships. Others can relay horror stories. I’m not sure what type of partner can be found through an ad, especially since there are so many parameters that must be uncovered before an agreement is signed.

If you don’t know a person, if the person has not been recommended by a trusted source, if you don’t have the ability to check the person’s mental and financial background thoroughly, accepting such a person as your partner may be more dangerous to your physical, mental, and financial stability than you realize.

How would you look for a partner, and what skills would you want that person to bring to the business?
