How My First Corporate Sale Failed

by Shirley George Frazier on March 16, 2009

gift baskets in other countries provide lessons for all of usI had high hopes when deciding to sponsor an Administrative Professionals Day luncheon at a local country club.

The end result I expected, when creating 250 gift bags for distribution, was for at least 3-5 percent of executives at the event to call me to place gift basket orders.

But I set myself up for failure and didn’t know it until I received the only expectation possible – no results.

Here are three of the many things I did wrong. I didn’t:

1. Demand an event invitation.
2. Choose the right products for my gift bags.
3. Request a master list of attendees.

Thankfully, this promotion didn’t cost a lot of money, but getting no results still stung. Has this happened to you, too?

If capturing corporate accounts are a big part of your plan, it’s important to ensure that you have a direct connection with the people in charge, so meeting them in a casual setting similar to the event I did not attend could have made a big difference the first time around.

I learned a lot from this first failure and moved forward to my next opportunity, which helped me get corporate accounts at MetLife and State Farm Insurance Company.

These and other experiences helped me reveal my best tips and techniques for capturing sales on the CD, 10 Surefire Ways to Cash In On Administrative Professionals Week.

How have you tried and failed at increasing your corporate sales, and when did the tide turn in your favor?

I too made the mistake of sponsoring events without getting a return on my investment. One thing I did not do was request a master list of the attendees. Going forward that is something that I’ll make certain to do.

Thanks Shirley, I appreciate all your tips and techniques.

Hi Consuela,

This oversight is normal at first, as we don’t realize what to request when participating in these events.

Now that you know what’s available, you can move forward with confidence to ask for such a list.

I’m glad to share this information with you.
