Wholesaler Wednesday, 5 Questions for…Peters Imports

by Shirley George Frazier on April 28, 2010

petersimportsMichigan-based Peters Imports maintains high marks with gift basket designers. In business since 1976, the company sells thousands of the fine gourmet foods and confections chosen every day for gift baskets worldwide.

If you’re not familiar with this top-service firm that caters to home-based designers, retail store owners, and commercial shops, this Q&A introduces you to who they are and why they’re lauded in the gift basket community.

Q: What are three top reasons you’ve heard from gift basket designers on why they buy from you?

PETERS: Our personal service level, the broad product selections, and quick shipping.

Q: You’re categorized as a distributor. What’s the advantage of coming to you for products and supplies rather than buying directly from a manufacturer?

PETERS: We have such a wide range of items, it makes it simpler to order from one company rather than from multiple companies. Combining orders also reduces the amount of freight customers pay. We also are able to ship one case of what designers want rather than having them meet minimums imposed by multiple manufacturers.

Q: What’s the minimum order requirement, and can designers purchase samples to try products before committing to buying more?

PETERS: The minimum order amount is $150, and customers may order samples on request.

Q: What’s new this year in your inventory for gift baskets, something you’ve added that wasn’t available in 2009?

PETERS: In 2010, we added a new Pre-sell holiday catalog that published this month, on April 1, with all our European imported holiday selections at 20% savings. The second holiday catalog will publish next month, in May 2010, with a lower 10% discount on mostly domestic products.

We have some lovely and interesting new items from Holland, England, Spain, and Germany. Our cookie tins from Denmark make excellent bases for gift towers, and the price is the lowest in years!

Q: What’s the strangest item you’ve been asked to stock, either by a wholesaler or retailer, which you turned down because it was too “out there?”

PETERS: Chocolate “G-String” or edible underwear!
