<img src="http://giftbasketbusiness.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/schoolsales.jpg" alt="" title="will you sell back to school baskets this season" width="275" height="287" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-292" /align="left" hspace="15"/>My first request for a back-to-school gift basket arrived because I planned it.

This is a theme that I knew my customers weren’t thinking about, but I was, so I decided to let them know, by mail and through general conversations, that going to college for the first time would be easier for freshman because of the baskets I created and delivered.

The plan worked. Each time I spoke with customers and prospects, I asked them about students in their families and how they were progressing in school. This opened the door for me to describe the available school baskets and its contents.

I made 45 back-to-school gifts in one month for a total of $5,200, all because I encouraged customers through casual conversation.

What’s your plan for selling back-to-school gift baskets between now and August?

Here’s an article recently published in Colorado’s Journal Advocate, all about 38 new college students who received gift baskets welcoming them to the campus.

It validates what I’ve realized through my marketing and the results achieved by other designers: parents are busy paying the bill and aren’t primary gift basket buyers.

Other well-wishing relatives are the ones who order.

The article also points out what today’s students are receiving in their baskets.

“The baskets were filled will all kinds of goodies and useful items. From packs of popcorn, highlighter pens and a t-shirt, to notebooks, pens, bubbles and a lanyard key chain, you could see some other great edibles tucked inside as well.”

What marketing approach are you using to get back-to-school gift basket orders, or what’s keeping you from pursuing that market?
